Cross country

GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. -- Fredonia State's cross country teams opened their season by each finishing third in team scoring at the Daniel Walker Invitational, hosted by Buffalo State, at Beaver Island State Park.

The Blue Devil women were led by three newcomers, junior Sarah Furman (West Berne/Berne-Knox-Westerlo), and freshmen Katie Krueger (Jamestown) and Jessica Stevenson (Mahopac). Furman was third overall in 20:08 for 5,000 meters. Krueger (21:16) and Stevenson (21:44) were 17th and 25th, respectively.

A pair of seniors, Laura Morroni (Elmira Heights/Edison) and Tricia Ippolito (Angola/Lake Shore), rounded out the Blue Devil top five -- Morroni (21:45) in 26th place, Ippolito (22:33) at 44th.

In the men's 8,000-meter race, junior Tom Williams (Queensbury) and senior Chris Walters (Tonawanda/Sweet Home) were 5th and 8th, in times of 26:39 and 26:59.  The  Blue Devils' next three finishers were sophomore Josh Guarino (Bergen/Byron-Bergen) at 21st (27:57), sophomore Eddie Navara (Angola/Lake Shore) at 22nd (27:58), and senior Tim Halter (Amherst/Sweet Home) at 26th (28:12).
