STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The Fredonia State men finished fourth in a field of nine teams at the Penn State Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational.
Competing against teams from Division I and some top Division III programs, the Blue Devils were led by junior Eddie Novara (Angola/Lake Shore) with a time of 26:33 for 5.2 miles over a sloppy course. Next was senior Tom Williams (Queensbury) in 27th place in 27:40, juniors Nick Guarino (Bergen/Byron-Bergen) and Josh Guarino (Bergen/Byron-Bergen) in 28th and 31st places with times of 27:44 and 27:53, and freshman Ryan Delaney (Coram/Longwood) in 37th with a time of 28:22. The sixth and seventh runners were junior David "Mac" McMahill (Hemlock/Livonia) in 49th and junior Matt Slight (Oswego) in 50th, with times of 29:05 and 29:08.
Michigan State won the meet, followed by nationally ranked Division III SUNYAC foe Geneseo, and Penn State. The Blue Devils finished ahead of University at Buffalo.
On the women's side, the Blue Devils were 10th in the team standings. The top five runners were freshman Nicole Bockman (Jamestown), 44th in 24:11 for 6,000 meters; sophomore Ashley Cocuzzi (Webster/Webster-Schroeder), 63rd in 26:06; junior Hailey Guard (Youngstown/Lewiston-Porter), 65th in 26:17; sophomore Shannon Gowen (Clarence), 66th in 26:21; and sophomore Katie Krueger (Jamestown), 67th in 27:29.
Next up for the Blue Devils: the Fredonia State Invitational next Saturday at Lake Erie State Park.
