BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- Placing three runners in the top 10, the Fredonia State men finished second of seven teams at the Brockport Invitational.

The Blue Devils, with 50 points, trailed only the University of Rochester (34 points), and outperformed Brockport, Hamilton, Buffalo State, New Paltz, and Geneseo "B" team.

Tom Williams (Queensbury), a junior, finished second in 16:06 for 5,000 meters, while and senior Chris Walters (Tonawanda/Sweet Home) third in 16:12. Also making the top 10 was sophomore Josh Guarino (Bergen/Byron-Bergen) in 16:33. Fredonia State's fourth and fifth finishers were sophomore Eddie Novara (Angola/Lake Shore), 17th overall, and sophomore Matt Kepler (Valley Cottage/Nyack), 18th overall. They each were timed in 16:50.

In the women's 5K race, junior Sarah Furman (West Berne/Berne-Knox-Westerlo) was Fredonia State's top finisher -- 15th overall -- in 20:42, followed by freshman Katie Krueger (Jamestown), 23rd in 21:13; senior Laura Morroni (Elmira Heights/Edison), 37th in 21:45; senior Tricia Ippolito (Angola/Lake Shore), 48th in 22:15; and sophomore Hailey Guard (Youngston/Lewiston-Porter), 60th in 22:48. The Blue Devils were sixth in team scoring.

Both Fredonia State teams will compete next Saturday in the lone home meet of the season at Lake Erie State Park in the town of Portland. The women's 5K race is scheduled for 11 a.m., with the men scheduled for an 8K starting at noon.
