EDINBORO, Pa. -- Head coach Jeff Beck gave his team a chance to do a little coaching of their own Saturday at the Edinboro Rag Relays.
After splitting his teams in groups of three, he let them choose their own lineups. "I made up the teams (so that) they would be competitive against each other," he said. "(They had) to come up with strategies on when to run certain runners to help their team in the race."
Beck said the trios of senior Trisha Ippolito (Angola/Lake Shore), freshman Katie Krueger (Jamestown), and sophomore Hailey Guard (Youngstown/Lewiston-Porter) among the women, and sophomore Eddie Novara (Angola/Lake Shore), freshman Steve Pastronostro (Angola/Lake Shore), and senior Joe Vella (Hamburg) among the men were the fastest Blue Devil teams. Official results were unavailable.
Overall, Beck felt the day went well. "The course is a nice 1,500-meter grass loop around a field that is perfect for training," he said. "With the team feeling a little beat up with aches and pains, this race-workout came at a perfect time."
The Blue Devils will return to the more conventional style of cross country running when they participate in the Geneseo Invitational next Saturday at Letchworth State Park.
