Devils come close in twinbill loss to Amherst

FT. MYERS, Fla. -- Fredonia State fell to 0-4 this spring with 5-3 and 4-3 losses to Amherst College at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

In the first game, Shawn Ridgeway (Ontario/Wayne) pitched a complete-game eight-hitter and allowed three earned runs. The Blue Devils never led and collected only five hits. A sixth-inning triple by Trey Johnson (Sinclairville/Cassadaga Valley) followed by an RBI double by Dave Ickowski (Buffalo/St. Mary's) led to the last Fredonia State run.

In the nightcap, the Blue Devils took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Brandon Phillips (Rochester/Gates-Chili) singled to start the rally. Shane Morrison (Elmira/Notre Dame) followed with a double. Johnson brought both runners home with a single.

Amherst took a 3-2 lead in the last half of the third, only to have the Blue Devils forge a 3-3 tie in the fourth inning. Kyle Adams (Naples/Naples) singled, went to third on a single by Phil Gavin (Rochester/Greece Olympia), and scored on a sacrifice fly by Sam Tuzzeo (Irondequoit/Irondequoit).

Amherst broke the tie with the final run of the game in the last of the fourth.

Craig Heath (Watkins Glen/Watkins Glen) was the starting and losing pitcher. Joe Webster (East Aurora/Iroquois) pitched two scoreless inning in relief.

The Blue Devils will look for their first win of the spring when they take on Lawrence at 9 a.m. and noon Saturday.
