MYERS, Fla. -- Fredonia State freshman Tom Hausler (Williamsville/Williamsville East) was making his first collegiate pitching appearance Saturday. It's one that he'll remember -- a five-hit 2-0 shutout victory over the Lawrence Vikings at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. The Blue Devils (1-5) earned a split on the day despite getting only one hit in their win. They lost the opener, 12-4. The only scoring in the second game came in the Fredonia State fourth inning. Junior Bryan Recchia (Webster/Webster Schroeder) was hit by a pitch and junior Trey Johnson (Sinclairville/Cassadaga Valley) walked to start the inning. A 4-6-3 double play put Recchia on third base with two outs. The inning continued when junior Kyle Adams (Naples/Naples) was hit by a pitch and junior Phil Gavin (Rochester/Greece Olympia) walked to load the bases. A check swing by sophomore Dan Murphy (Eden/Eden) resulted in a slow roller toward third. The Lawrence third baseman threw off-balance past first and two runners scored. A defensive play in the seventh inning by freshman shortstop Sam Tuzzeo (Irondequoit/Irondequoit) preserved Hausler's shutout. Following a lead-off triple, Tuzzeo fielded a deep grounder and threw to the plate where Murphy applied the tag to retire the runner trying to score from third. With more help from his defense, Hausler faced the minimum number of batters over the first 4 1/3 innings. Murphy threw out two runners trying to steal and the Blue Devil infielders turned two double plays during that span. In their 12-4 loss in the opener, the Blue Devils took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a double by Johnson and RBI singles by senior Dave Ickowski (Buffalo/St. Mary's) and Adams. They scratched for two more runs in the seventh inning on a pinch-hit single by Recchia and RBI groundouts by Gavin and Johnson. The Blue Devils play a split doubleheader Sunday. They'll face Trinity starting at 9 a.m. Their second game of the day, vs. Colby, is scheduled to start at noon.
