Devils drop two by decisive margins

FT. MYERS, Fla. -- The Fredonia State baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader by decisive margins on Sunday.

They dropped a 13-0 decision to No. 14 Trinity (Conn.) in the opener, and fell 16-7 in the second game vs. Colby College.

Trinity starting pitcher Jared Cox held the Devils hitless until Phil Gavin (Rochester/Greece Olympia) ripped a single with one out in the sixth inning. Dave Ickowski (Poland, Ohio/St. Mary's) followed with the Devils' only other hit of the game. Tom Gryguc and Tim Meehan combined in relief for Trinity on the two-hitter.

Fredonia State's starting pitcher Trey Johnson (Gerry/Cassadaga Valley) threw well, limiting Trinity to one run on two hits through the first three innings. However, five walks limited him to three innings of work. Trinity added an unearned run in the fourth off reliever Matt Bauman (Alden/St. Francis) to take a 2-0 lead.

The score remained 2-0 until the sixth when three Fredonia State errors led to four unearned runs to make it 6-0. Trinity scored three more runs in the seventh and four more in the eighth off Devil reliever Doug Cap (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls) to give the final.

Against Colby, the Mules scored seven runs in the first inning put the Devils in a hole. Devil starting pitcher Noah Huard (Buffalo/City Honors) gave up three more runs before yielding to reliver Joe Webster (Elma/Iroquois) in the second.

Webster would give up four runs in the third to make it 14-0 Trinity. Bauman -- making his second appearance of the day -- gave up a run in two innings of work.

Jordan Basile (Jamestown/Jamestown) pitched effectively in relief, limiting Colby to one run on five hits in four innings pitched.

Offensively, the Devils collected 11 hits. Kyle Adams (Naples/Naples) was 4 for 4. Mike Austin (Buffalo/City Honors) had two hits and three RBI.

The Devils are off Monday. They will travel to Port Charlotte on Tuesday to take on St. Olaf.
