Devils split with Oberlin as bats awake

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Fredonia State bats came to life with seven runs in the sixth inning of Game 2 vs. Oberlin en route to a 12-6 victory.

Senior first baseman Dave Ickowski (Buffalo/St. Mary's) had a double to lead off the inning and a three-run double later in the inning as the Blue Devils (2-9) took the lead for the first time.

Freshman Dan Taurisani (Utica/Proctor) drove in two runs in the frame with a bases-loaded single to start the scoring. Two runs scored on a Sam Tuzzeo (Irondequoit/Irondequoit) sacrifice bunt that was thrown down the right-field line by the Yeoman pitcher.

Junior Trey Johnson (Gerry/Cassadaga Valley) drove in the other run with a bases-loaded walk.

The Devils tacked on two more in the top of the seventh with a leadoff double by junior Phil Gavin (Rochester/Greece Olympia), a walk to Tuzzeo and a two-run double by sophomore Dan Murphy (Eden/Eden).

Ickowski, Gavin, Taurisani and Tuzzeo each had two hits for the Devils.

Junior righthander Joe Webster (East Aurora/Iroquois) earned the win in relief, going three innings and allowing one run on four hits.

In the opener, freshman righty Tom Hausler (Williamsville/Williamsville East) gave the Devils a quality start, but it would not prove enough as Oberlin won 5-2.

Offensively, the Devils were lead by junior Mike Austin (Buffalo/City Honors) with three hits, including a double, and two stolen bases. Johnson had the lone RBI for the Devils with a seventh-inning single.

The Devils wrap up their spring trip with a 10 a.m. doubleheader vs. Colby College on Thursday.
