Behrend silences Devil bats

ERIE, Pa. -- After scoring 21 times in their previous doubleheader, the Devils failed to score in either game as they were swept by the Penn State Behrend Lions, 5-0 and 3-0, on Thursday afternoon.

Behrend lefty hurler Ray DeVaul shutout the Devils on four hits. Fredonia State starting pitcher Shawn Ridgway (Ontario/Wayne) absorbed the loss. He went three innings and gave up five runs. Freshman Doug Cap (Niagara Falls/Niagara Catholic) threw the final three innings and allowed one hit over that span. Cap extended his scoreless-inning streak to 11.

The Devils out-hit Behrend 7 to 5 in the second game, but could not take advantage of opportunities to score, stranding 10 runners.

Jeremy Clark (Newfield/Newfield) went the distance on the mound for the Devils. He needed just 62 pitches to complete the game. Clark allowed one earned run and retired 11 of the final 12 batters he faced. Eric Nachreiner was the winner for the Lions, throwing 4 2/3 innings and allowing four hits.

Phil Gavin (Rochester/Greece Olympia) paced the Devil hitters with three hits on the day. Jim Kunkemoeller (Alden/St. Francis) had a hit in each game, while Matt Baudo (Buffalo/St. Joe's) had two singles in the nightcap.

The Devils have a pair of SUNYAC contests on the road this weekend. They play Plattsburgh State on Saturday and travel to Utica to take on SUNYIT on Sunday. The Devils control their own destiny as far as the post season goes. If they win out, they clinch a berth in the SUNYAC Tournament; a loss and they will need help.
