Devils, Redhawks trade wins

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State baseball team split a doubleheader with LaRoche Tuesday at Ludwig Field. LaRoche (23-15) took game one 12-1 before the Devils (12-19) took game two 11-2.

In the nightcap, the Devils used a seven-run third inning to take control of the game. Mike Austin (Buffalo/City Honors) led off the inning with a single. He would finish the inning with a two-run base hit. Sam Tuzzeo (Irondequoit) had an RBI double, while Jim Kunkemoeller (West Seneca/St. Francis) added a two-run double in the frame.

Kevin Malaney added a three-run home run in the fourth inning, his fourth of the season.

Matt Bauman went six innings on the mound and improved his record to 2-1. Joe Webster struck out a pair in the seventh to preserve the win.

In game one, LaRoche's Varinder Gill held the Devil offense to three hits. Justin Nowak suffered the loss for the Devils, going 4 1/3 innings.

The Devils split the season series with the regular-season Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference champion Redhawks. The two teams split a season-opening series on March 13.

The Devils travel to Oneonta for a SUNYAC doubleheader on Saturday where a pair of wins will put them in the post season tournament. Any loss, and the Devils will need some help.
