Devils fall short vs. Cortland

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State could not make an early 2-0 lead hold up in Game 2, dropping a 6-2 game to No. 3 ranked Cortland State on Saturday. Cortland also claimed Game 1, 8-4.

Cortland (30-3), winners of 26 straight, used a five-run first to take control. The inning was highlighted by a Nick DeVito two-run home run.

Fredonia State would answer right back in its half of the first, as Rob Herrmann had a two-run single.

The Devils added another run in the sixth, as Dan Murphy reached base via a walk and scored on a throwing error by the Cortland third baseman to make it a 5-3 game.

Errors would prove to be costly for the Devils in the top of the seventh. With one out, a pair Blue Devil errors put two runner on. Following a fly out, Mike Vitalone homered to make it 8-3 Cortland.

Fredonia State's Pete Lusk would drive in the game's final run on an RBI single.

Tommy Dee and Joe Kephart provided solid relief for the Devils, combining to go 7 1/3 innings and giving up no earned runs.

Game 2 saw Herrmann stake the Devils to a 2-0 lead. He tripled to left centerfield, and advanced home on an errant throw as he ran to third.

The lead would hold up until Cortland scored five runs in the fourth. They scored the first run on a bases loaded walk. That was followed by a three-run triple off the bat of Joey Russo. Ryan Benson followed that with a bloop double that hit the foul line to score Russo.

Cortland scored its final run on an errant pickoff attempt at second base.

The Devils are now 15-19 overall and 5-7 in the conference. They play Oneonta Sunday at Noon. A sweep will earn the Devils a SUNYAC post-season berth.
