Devils swept out of SUNYACs

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- A doubleheader sweep at the hands of Oneonta on Sunday eliminated the Fredonia State baseball team from hopes of a post-season berth. Oneonta won 2-6 and 10-1.

Oneonta scored one run in the second inning and three runs in the third to take a 4-0 lead. Dan Randall highlighted the scoring with a two-run homer.

Oneonta tacked on one more in the fifth, with Ryan Myers scoring on a wild pitch to make it 5-0 Oneonta.

The Devils scored both their runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jordan Basile plated the first run with a bases loaded single. Dan Murphy grounded out to first to score the second run.

Oneonta scored its final run when Randall drove home Myers with a ninth-inning single.

Ricky Carlson took the loss for the Devils, going five innings and giving up three earned runs. Andy Dlugosz pitched the final four, yielding only one run. Jarrod Surine and Don Kirsch had two hits apiece for the Devils.

Oneonta's Ken Smith scattered six hits and gave up two runs over seven innings to earn the win. Randall had three hits to pace the Red Dragon offense.

Game 2 saw Oneonta score once in the first and once in the second to take a 2-0 lead. The Devils answered with a run in the third to cut the lead in half. Brian Bongiovanni singled and was advanced to third after back-to-back walks. Basile plated Bongiovanni when he grounded into a double play.

Oneonta scored two in the fifth as Steve Gauck homered to open the inning. Myers would plate the second run with a sacrifice fly.

Oneonta scored three times in the sixth and three times in the seventh to give the 10-1 final.

The Devils were limited to four hits in the second game. Bongiovanni and Kevin Malaney had two each. Gauck had three hits for Oneonta.

Sam Ackerman earned the win going five innings and giving up one run. Matt Bauman took the loss. He tossed five innings allowing four runs.

Basile's hit in the first game was his 50th of the season. He is only the second Blue Devil to reach that plateau. Matt Clark had 53 hits in 2003.

The Devils are now 15-21 overall and finish conference play 5-9. Oneonta is now 22-14 and earns the No. 2 seed for the SUNYAC Tournament.

The Devils wrap up their season Wednesday as they play host to Penn State Behrend for a pair of games beginning at 2 p.m.
