Ludwig Field kind to Devils

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State baseball team stayed perfect at home, defeating Brockport by identical 6-5 scores in both ends of a double-header on Monday. The Devils are now 3-0 at home.

It took the Devils 11 innings to claim the first game. They scored first with a run in the fourth. Don Kirsch drove in Kevin Malaney with an RBI single. The Devils would up the lead to 2-0 in the fifth. Rob Herrmann drove home Jarrod Surine with a single.

The Devils kept the pressure on with a pair of runs in the seventh to take a 4-0 lead. Herrmann and Jeremy Borst each drove home a run.

Starting pitcher Ricky Carlson held kept Brockport scoreless until the eighth. A leadoff walk and an RBI double by Chris Gentzke ended his day. Justin Nowak relieved, striking out two and surrendering a sacrifice fly to Rob Maxwell as Brockport made it 4-2.

Brockport plated two in the ninth to tie the game. With two out, Brockport's Joe LaDuca reached on an error. Back-to-back singles by Jason Michaels and Jared Perham tied things up at 4-all.

Brockport took its first lead in the top of the 11th on a Perham double off Devil relief pitcher Andy Dlugosz.

The Devils then had a dramatic rally in the bottom of the inning. Taylor Gahagen reached second on an infield throwing error with one out. Kevin Malaney singled him home to tie the score at 5-all. Malaney advanced to second on the throw to the plate. Tommy Dee pinch ran for Malaney. Kirsch advanced Dee to third with an infield hit. Borst then fouled off five pitches before driving in Dee with a walk-off single to right field.

Borst and Malaney would finish the game with four hits apiece. Kirsch added three as the Devils pounded out 17 hits. Tom Hausler vultured the win, retiring the only batter he faced.

The Devils kept the momentum into game two. A four-run first gave them the early lead. Six singles accounted for the runs.

Brockport countered in the third. With one out, four straight singles, a hit by pitch and a sacrifice fly tallied three runs to make it 4-3 Fredonia State.

Kirsch and Borst extended the Devils lead to 6-3 with RBI singles in the bottom half of the inning.

Brockport chipped away with a run in the fifth and a run in the seventh. However, Fredonia State reliever Jeremy Hulbert shut the door with two solid innings of relief earning a save. Hulbert had pitched 5 1/3 innings the day before.

Brandon Miller was credited with the win. He went five innings and gave up four runs, three of which were earned. Hulbert went two innings, yielding one run while striking out two.

Dan Murphy had three hits for the Devils, while Malaney and Kirsch added a pair of safeties.

The Devils move to 7-10 overall and 2-2 in the SUNYAC. Brockport falls to 6-12-1, and 0-4 in the conference.

The Devils play a nine-inning contest Tuesday at D'Youville. Gametime is slated for 2 p.m.
