Both games were close until the final inning. The Devils trailed 4-2 until the Cardinals erupted for six runs in the sixth inning of game one. Game two was tied 3-all when St. John Fisher (14-3-1) again took control in its final at bat, scoring three times in the sixth. The Devils had eight hits in game one, led by Jim Kunkemoeller with a pair of safeties. Matt Saeva started on the mound and worked five innings, surrendering four runs while taking the loss. The Devils out hit Fisher in game two, nine to six, but Fisher made use if its hits to score. A two-run home run by Jon Gibbs in the second and a triple by Bobby Toland in the third accounted for the team's first three runs. Fredonia State scored one run in each of the third, fifth and sixth innings. Kunkemoeller drove home Jordan Basile with a sacrifice fly in the third. He again drove in Basile in the fifth, this time with a single. A one-out Kevin Malaney triple followed by a Rob Herrmann double gave the Devils their final run. Fisher would tally three in the sixth. Chad King reached first on an error to lead off the inning, and was sacrificed to second. After an intentional walk to Dave Roth, Gibbs, Toland and Mike Armstrong hit back-to-back-to-back singles to drive in three runs. Andy Dlugosz took the loss. He tossed five innings of relief yielding four hits and three earned runs. Basile, Malaney and Herrmann each had two hits for the Devils. Both of Malaney's hits were triples. Next up for the Devils (8-12) is a weekend SUNYAC homestand vs. New Paltz and Oneonta Saturday and Sunday. Both doubleheaders begin at noon.
