With the bases loaded in the last of the seventh, freshman Mike Austin (Buffalo/City Honors) was hit on the wrist with a pitch to force in the winning run in a 2-1 non-conference home win for the Blue Devils (5-20). Austin's wrist was bruised by the blow. Nonetheless, he took part in the post-victory celebration, made possible behind the three-hit pitching of Brandon Miller (Ripley/Ripley). Miller struck out six batters, gave up one unearned run, and improved to 3-1 this spring. He outdueled Behrend lefthander Jason Shaffer (McKees Rocks, Pa.), who pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts. In the first game of the doubleheader, Shane Elzer (Washington, Pa.) hit a three-run homer and Mitch Reckner (Brockway, Pa.) had a two-run blast in an 11-3 Behrend victory. Chris McCartney (Pittsburgh, Pa.) pitched five scoreless innings to earn the victory. Reckner added an RBI double while Fredonia State's Shane Morrison (Elmira/Notre Dame) had a double and an RBI.
