Devils late rally earns split

FREDONIA, N.Y. – A three-run seventh, capped by an Adam Bianchi (Rochester/Greece Olympia) two-run double gave the Blue Devils a 5-4 win and a split in the two-game set versus Penn State Behrend (21-12) at Ludwig Field on Thursday afternoon.

Down 4-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Tom Butler (Sherril/Vernon-Verona-Sherril) led off with a single. After a fly out to left, Donny Burch (Cuba/Cuba-Rushford) plated Butler with a double. Behrend intentionally walked John Papierski (Dunkirk/Dunkirk). After a strike out, Bianchi came through with the game-winner.

Matt Bauman (Alden/St. Francis) picked up his first college win with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Trey Johnson (Gerry/Cassadaga Valley) started on the mound. He took a no-hitter through 4 2/3 innings. He was chased after tiring in the fifth, allowing four runs and striking out six.

Burch and Butler each collected three hits in the game. Kyle Adams (Naples/naples) had a two-run single to account for Fredonia's first two runs. Tony Kordecki had a two-run triple to lead the Lions.

In game 1, freshman pitcher Jeremy Clark (Newfield/Newfield) gave the Blue Devils a complete-game effort, but it wasn't enough as they dropped an 8-7 decision. After allowing a first inning run, the Devils plated five scores in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Burch.

After retiring the first two batters in the second, Behrend collected three-consecutive singles. A two-out error followed by a Kordecki homerun accounted for four unearned runs and a 6-5 Behrend lead. The Devils fought back with two runs in the third. A triple by Papierski, single by Phil Gavin (Rochester/Greece Olympia) and double by Mike Austin (Buffalo/City Honors) accounted for the runs.

Clark finished with six strikeouts, no walks and four earned runs.

Gavin and Austin each collected a pair of hits in the game.

The Blue Devils (4-22) play host to Plattsburgh and SUNYIT in SUNYAC action this weekend.
