Florida recap

FT. PIERCE, FLA. – As the Fredonia State baseball team returns from Florida, optimism is high despite the 1-7 record. The Devils got more than adequate pitching from their staff, that often times had the team in position to win. However the story of the trip was errors and miscues, that led to a majority of the losses.

In the first game of the trip vs. Earlham, Shawn Ridgway had a quality start, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing 7 runs. However, three Devil errors resulted in only three of those runs being earned, which came back to haunt the team as they lost the game 7-4. Kyle Adams and Matt Baudo had two hits apiece, and Mike Austin had a two-run double in the game. Ridgway took the loss for the Devils.

Later that day in a rematch with Earlham, starter Craig Heath left after the fifth inning with a 6-5 lead, only to see it disapear, as the Devils lost 7-6. Another quality start by a Fredonia pitcher was all for not due to 5 errors. Heath went 5 innings, giving up 5 runs, only 2 earned. Kyle Adams remained hot with two more hits; a double and an RBI single. Donny Burch also added a triple.

The following day the Devils took on Becker College. Becker jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead after the first inning, cruising to a 6-2 victory. Starter Bobby Edwards allowed the first five batters to reach base in the inning. After that however, he settled down allowing only 4 hits and one run, while taking the loss. Edwards and Phil Gavin paced Fredonia at the plate with two hits apiece.

In the second game of the day the Blue Devils dropped a 13-3 decision to Westminster, as starter Donny Burch was roughed up for 9 earned runs in 3 1/3 innings. The Devil hitters didn't fare any better, as they only managed 5 hits. Mike Austin had two of them, and Matt Baudo added a two-run single.

The middle of the week saw the team take on national power St. Scholastica. Shawn Ridgway took the loss going only 1/3 of a scheduled 1 inning start. He allowed 7 earned runs as Fredonia lost the game 18-4. The bright spots on offense included Burch with 3 hits, and Bryan Recchia with two.

After an off day in which the team took in a spring training game, the Devils returned to action against Mt. St. Mary's. The team started to put things together, but fell just short, losing the game 4-3. Adams took the loss, going 4 innings and giving up 3 runs. Three Devil hitters shined as the trio of Austin, Edwards, and Trey Johnson had two hits apiece. Austin and Edwards each had doubles, while Johnson had a double and a triple.

The next day, Devil miscues again cost them as Fredonia fell 13-11 in 8 innings to DII Nyack. Despite a strong start by freshman Noah Huard, and equally strong relief appearances from Jeremy Clark, Joe Webster, and Craig Heath, errors led to the downfall of the team. Five errors resulted in only five of the 13 runs scored by Nyack being earned. Edwards continued his hot hitting with 3 more hits, including a triple. Johnson had two doubles, while Matt Baudo and John Papierski had two hits apiece in the losing effort.

In the final game of the trip, Edwards returned to throw a complete game one-hit shutout, as Fredonia defeated Centenary 1-0. Edwards had a no-hitter through 6 1/3 innings before giving up a bloop single up the middle in the final inning. Edwards had 5 strikeouts on the day, and only needed 84 pitches to complete the shutout. On offense, Fredonia only managed 3 hits- one each from Johnson, Edwards, and Gavin. Johnson's second inning single plated Burch for the game's lone run.
