Johnson, a freshman right-hander, struck out six. The run he allowed was unearned. It came in the fourth inning after his teammates had staked him to a 4-0 lead. The Blue Devils (4-17) had seven hits, five of them for extra bases. Rich Bartkowiak (Fredonia/Fredonia) led off the third inning with a long homer down the line in left, his first of the season and second as a Blue Devil. Later in the same inning, Scott Herdzik (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) doubled in one run and scored on a infield grounder by Tim Lockhart (Youngstown/Lewiston-Porter). The Herdzik-Lockhart combination was at it again in the fifth inning. After a single by Bret McCabe (Buffalo/St. Francis), his first of two hits in the game, Herdzik tripled and then scored on a double by Lockhart. Kyle Adams (Naples/Naples) followed with his own RBI double for the sixth Fredonia State run. Medaille won the first game, 11-3. David Polly (Syracuse) had three hits and four RBI for the Mavericks, including a three-run triple to cap a nine-run first inning. Nick Luther (Springville) was the winning pitcher.
