Devils split with Southern Virginia

FRONT ROYAL, Va. – Fredonia State split a double-header Saturday with Southern Virginia, and earned its first win of the season in the process.

The Blue Devils (1-2) won the first game, 8-7, as Kyle Adams (Naples/Naples) cracked a go-ahead two-run homer.

Southern Virginia (9-9) won the second game, 11-2. Both games were played at Randolph Macon Academy High School.

Brandon Miller (Ripley/Ripley) earned the win for the Blue Devils in the opener. He allowed one hit -- a solo homer -- in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Scott Herdzik (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) was the Fredonia State starter.

The homer by Adams came in the sixth inning and put the Blue Devils on top, 7-6. They added an insurance run in the seventh with three walks and an RBI groundout by Bryan Recchia (Webster/Webster Schroeder).

Recchia, Herdzik and Tim Lockhart (Youngstown/Lewiston-Porter) had two hits each in the first game.

The Blue Devils were limited to four hits in the second game, three in the first inning. One of those was a solo homer by Herdzik.

Donny Burch (Cuba/Cuba-Rushford) started and took the loss despite a solid outing of four innings. Noah Huard (Buffalo/City Honors) and Trey Johnson (Gerry/Cassadaga Valley) each pitched one inning of relief.

The Blue Devils are back in action Monday at Gannon before embarking on an 11-day, 10-game road trip to Fort Pierce, Fla., New Paltz and Oneonta.
