SUNYIT Doubles Up Fredonia

Fredonia, N.Y. – The SUNYIT baseball team took both ends of a doubleheader, 7-4 and 12-11, from the Fredonia State Blue Devils on Saturday afternoon.

Tied one-all in the opener, the Wildcats used a four-run third inning to take control of the game. Starter Mike Munski (Rochester/Rush-Henrietta)opened the inning with a pair of walks. After consecutive fly-ball outs, Greg Sacco (Utica) drove in Richard Langaniere (Binghampton) to make it 2-1. Josh Goodbred (Green Island) followed with a three-run homer to make it 5-1. SUNYIT held a 7-2 lead heading into the final frame.

Shane Morrison (Batavia/Notre Dame) started the inning with a single. Two outs later, Kyle Adams (Naples/Naples) plated Morrison with an RBI double. Brandon Miller (Ripley/Ripley) followed with an RBI single before the rally was snuffed to give the 7-4 final.

Steve Schaefer (Schenactady) earned the win going the distance for SUNYIT striking out eight while walking two.

The Blue Devils struck first in game two with consecutive hits by Morrison, Bret McCabe (Buffalo/St. Francis), and Scott Herdzik (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) to start the inning and take a 1-0 advantage. Morrison scored another run in the second as a McCabe grounder was booted by the shortstop to make it 2-0.

In the third, SUNYIT took the lead for the first time. Alex Kersman (Worcester) connected for a two-out, three-run homer to make it 3-2. SUNYIT would score again in the fourth before the Blue Devils came back with a seven-run fourth.

Fredonia State opened the inning with a pair of walks. Morrison singled to load the bases. After an infield popup, a bases loaded walk to Herdzik made it 4-3. Consecutive infield hits by Tim Lockhart (Youngstown/Lewiston-Porter) and Miller made it 5-3 in favor of the Blue Devils. Another bases loaded walk, this time to Jared Ochs (Waterloo/Waterloo), made it 6-3. A fielding error on a grounder to second base put the Blue Devils up by four. Adam Fusco (Retsof/York) capped the scoring with a two RBI single to make it 9-4.

The lead would not stand, though, as SUNYIT scored one in the fifth on a Dan Porcelli (Utica) double and Jason Lansing RBI single. The Wildcats scored five in the fifth to make it 9-all, chasing starter Kyle Adams. Laganiere highlighted the inning with a two-run single.

The Devils regained the lead in the sixth on a two-run homer by Ochs to make it 11-9. SUNYIT would pull to within one in the fifth as a Jason Vick (Stuyvesant) scored on a groundball double-play.

With the Devils holding a one-run lead in the ninth, SUNYIT used an infield hit and a walk to put the go-ahead run on base. Laganiere then laced a two-run double to give the Wildcats an 11-10 lead that would hold up. Trey Johnson (Gerry/Cassadaga Valley) absorbed the loss for Fredonia. Brad Ebert (Mexico) went the distance for SUNYIT, striking out 13.

Miller led the Blue Devils with six hits on the day. Morrison chipped in with five hits, while Lockhart added three. Laganiere paced the Wildcats with a five-hit day.

Fredonia State drops to 5-22 on the season and 0-10 in the SUNYAC. SUNYIT stands at 9-7 (2-6). Fredonia State hosts Brockport tomorrow at noon in their final home game of the year. SUNYIT plays host to Oswego at noon.
