Late-inning heroics earn Devils a split

FREDONIA, N.Y.Kyle Adams' (Naples/Naples) one-out double plated Phil Gavin (Rochester/Greece Olympia) and Dan Murphy (Eden/Eden) in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Blue Devils came from behind to earn a 15-14 win. Murphy slid in just under the tag of catcher Justin Laskey with the game-winner.

SUNYIT clamed the opener, 8-1.

The Devils, down two runs to start the inning, began the frame with a single off the bat of John Papierski (Dunkirk/Dunkirk). Gavin followed with a single of his own. Papierski would score when Murphy followed with a one-out single to right to make it 14-13, SUNYIT. Adams would then connect with the game-winner.

All nine Fredonia State batters recorded a hit. Bryan Recchia (Webster/Webster Schroeder) and Papierski led the 19-hit barrage with three hits apiece. Recchia and Mike Austin (Buffalo/City Honors) also collected three RBI. Gavin drilled his first collegiate homerun for Fredonia in the first inning.

Shawn Ridgway (Ontario/Wayne) was credited with the win after retiring the only batter he faced in the top of the seventh.

SUNYIT collected 16 hits, led by three apiece from Robert Alvarez, Ty Brodt, Matt Zyskowski and Greg Sacco. Brodt and Zyskowski homered for the Wildcats.

In game one, SUNYIT's Dean Williams scattered six hits in seven innings pacing the Wildcats to the 8-1 victory. Williams struck out five and walked none for his fourth win on the season.

Offensively, Willie Wilson garnered three hits and collected two RBI for SUNYIT.

Fredonia was led by Gavin's three for three output. Jeremy Clark (Newfield/Newfield) absorbed the loss, going four innings and surrendering three earned runs. Ridgway also appeared on the mound for the Devils in the opener, working two scoreless innings.

The game was the final contest for Fredonia's two seniors, Mike Munski and Donny Burch. Munski, a two-year team captain, competed for three seasons, while Burch, a transfer from Alfred State, played two seasons at Fredonia.

The Blue Devils finish their season at 7-26 overall and tied for sixth in the SUNYAC at 4-10. SUNYIT stands at 9-18. They wrap up their season tomorrow versus Union College.
