Cortland in town for Friday doubleheader

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- It's a home basketball weekend at Fredonia State.

The Cortland Red Dragons visit Steele Hall for a doubleheader Friday. The women's game begins at 6 p.m., followed by the men at 8 p.m.

Here's a look at each of the two games:

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL -- The Blue Devils take a 2-2 mark into their first SUNYAC game of the season. They will be facing a Cortland team that returns four starters, including 2006-07 SUNYAC Player of the Year Sara Cavanaugh, 2006-07 SUNYAC Rookie of the Year Jessica Laing, and all-conference honorable mention point guard Maggie Byrne. The Red Dragons are 2-0 and Laing leads SUNYAC in scoring (26.0) and rebounding (14.0) average. Fredonia State senior forward Cheryl Kindzia (Williamsville/Williamsville North) -- the SUNYAC Player of the Week -- is second in scoring (21.7) and third in rebounding (9.7). "Defensively," Fredonia State head coach Donna Wise said, "(we) will need to aggressively get out and defend the threes as well as Cortland’s inside game. Offensively, we will need and to generate offense out of our aggressive defense as well as have a balanced scoring attack."

MEN'S BASKETBALL -- The two teams have had opposite starts. The Blue Devils are 0-3 while Cortland is 3-1 in non-conference play. The Red Dragons also boast the reigning SUNYAC Player of the Week in sophomore forward Paul Oliver. Meanwhile, Fredonia State sophomore guard Brad Cooper (Monticello) is among SUNYAC leaders in three statistical categories -- seventh in scoring (19.7), eighth in free-throw percentage (94.1%), and sixth in steals (2.67). Senior center Kyle Gordon (Canandaigua) is second in rebounding (9.7). "We have played," Fredonia State head coach Kevin Moore said, "stretches of very good basketball in all three of our games, along with that we have played some stretches of not so good basketball. Although we lost to D’Youville I think that there were a lot of good things that we did and right now it’s about being consistent for 40 minutes. Most importantly consistent intensity on the defensive end of the floor. We need to be the aggressor on defense for the entire game to have a chance to beat a very big and physical Cortland team."
