Final weekend of regular season for men, women

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women will get a look at both ends of the SUNYAC spectrum on the final weekend of the regular season at Steele Hall.

First, the Blue Devils (14-8, 9-5 SUNYAC) will first play host to the SUNYIT Wildcats (5-17, 1-13 SUNYAC), the last-place team in the conference, at 6 p.m. Friday.

On Saturday, the first-place Cortland Red Dragons (20-2, 14-0) pay a visit, again a 6 p.m. start.

Fredonia State has an outside chance to move up into the No. 4 seed in the eight-team SUNYAC Tournament bracket. The top four seeds receive a first-round home game next Tuesday. The women are 8-1 at home this season heading into the weekend, including a 5-1 mark against SUNYAC schools.

Yet it's more likely they will have to play on the road next Tuesday, at either Geneseo or Oneonta, for the right to advance SUNYAC semifinals next Friday at Utica.

With no seniors on the women's team, the business of saying farewell -- as well as welcome back -- rest on the men's side. For the current Blue Devils (9-14, 4-10 SUNYAC), this is the final weekend for five seniors.

A pre-game ceremony will be held Saturday to recognize Tim Anderson (Jamestown/Jamestown), Chris Donahue (Olean/Olean), Mike Kelly (Corning/Corning East), Chris Kensy (Cheektowaga/Maryvale), and Devin Watkins (Franklinville/Franklinville).

The men's games both nights are 8 p.m. -- Friday vs. SUNYIT (12-10, 8-6 SUNYAC), and Saturday vs. Cortland (21-2, 13-1 SUNYAC).

Earlier Saturday, at 2 p.m. in Dods Hall, former head coach and current Director of Athletics Greg Prechtl will return to the bench for one afternoon to coach former Blue Devils in the annual Alumni Game.
