Sheehan nets pair as Devils edge Mustangs
MORRISVILLE, N.Y. -- Fredonia State completed its weekend sweep of Morrisville State with a 3-2 SUNYAC road win Saturday night.
Neal Sheehan (Avon Lake, Ohio) scored at 5:34 of the third period and Kevin Amborski (Bloomfield) turned aside 21 shots in the Fredonia State net.
It was the second goal of the game for Sheehan and his eighth of the season. Alex Morton (Cannington, Ont.) also scored for the Blue Devils (9-5-3, 5-2-2 SUNYAC), winners of four straight games.
After a scoreless first period, Sheehan opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 5:47 of the second period. The Mustangs (4-17-0, 0-13-0) bounced back to take a 2-1 lead on goals by Dana Calderone and Matt Damskov in a span of two minutes in the middle of the second period.
Morton forged a 2-2 tie with his second goal of the season at 15:11 of the second period. Sheehan's second goal -- the second game-winner this season and his 52nd goal as a Blue Devil -- accounted for the only scoring of the third period.
The Blue Devils had a 50-23 advantage in shots with Morrisville State's Brett Freese getting credit for 47 saves. The Blue Devils were also 4 for 4 on the penalty kill.
Fredonia State returns to Steele Hall next Friday vs. Manhattanville.
