Devils gain revenge on Utica
Fredonia, N.Y. -- After falling behind early, Fredonia State bounced back to claim a decisive 5-3 victory over the Utica Pioneers Saturday evening.
Utica freshman Vinny Rinaldi scored at 3:24 of the first period to stake the Pioneers to 1-0 lead. Fredonia State returned fire with two first period goals of their own -- one by freshman forward Bryan Goudy (Port Huron, Mich.) and the other by senior forward Steve Greenberg (East Lansing, Mich.) to take a 2-1 lead.
The Pioneers would tie the game 2-all at 5:55 of the second period with a goal by sophomore Joe Watson. However, Fredonia State took control from there.
The Devils scored three goals in the third period. Senior Tom Briggs (Fruitport, Mich.), freshman Colin Sarfeh (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and sophomore Neal Sheehan (Avon Lake, Ohio) each found the back of the net for Fredonia State. Sheehan's goal was his team-leading 10th goal.
Utica did manage a goal from Colin Kingston in the third, but it was too little, too late.Junior forwards Kraig Kuzma (Muskegon, Mich) and Matt Zeman (Rocky River, Ohio) each had two assists for the victors.
The Pioneers had goals from Joe Watson in the second and Colin Kingston in the third period. Josh Merson had two assists in the losing effort.
Fredonia State senior goaltender Simon Maignon (Pulley, Switz.) was credited with 19 saves. Pioneer netminder Adam Dekker stopped 12 shots in the loss.
Fredonia State improves to 9-6-2, and is a perfect 8-0-0 at home this season. Utica drops to 9-6-0. The all-time series is now even at 4-4-2.
The Blue Devils will travel to Div. 1 RIT on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. face-off.
