RIT turns back stubborn Devils, 5-3
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Rochester Institute of Technology broke a 3-3 tie with a goal late in the second period, then added an insurance score en route a 5-3 victory over Fredonia State.
The Tigers (6-15-2), new to NCAA Division I this season, averted a second straight loss to a SUNYAC team (they lost to Oswego last Saturday). Brennan Sarazin scored on a power play at 17:03 of the second period, and Darren Doherty scored his second goal of the game at 15:38 of the final period.
For the Blue Devils (9-7-2), sophomore forward Neal Sheehan (Avon Lake, Ohio) had two powe-play goals and one assist, while junior forward Kyle Bozoian (St. Charles, Mo.) collected three assists.
The goals by Sheehan were his team-leading 12th and 13th of the season, each one forging a tie, first at 2-2 and later at 3-3. Junior forward Kraig Kuzma (Muskegon, Mich.) opened the Fredonia State scoring with a power-play goal at 3:03 of the first period. It, too, resulted in a tie score (1-1).
Senior goalkeeper Rick Cazares (San Jose, Calif.) stopped 37 of 42 RIT shots. RIT's George Eliopoulos made 25 saves.
The game was likely the final time the teams will meet. The Tigers are first-year members of Atlantic Hockey, a Division I conference, and will play strictly Division I teams starting next season.
Meanwhile, the Blue Devils return to SUNYAC action Friday with a road game at Buffalo State.
