Power-play goals put Devils past Bengals
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Two power-play goals in the second period carried Fredonia State to a 2-1 SUNYAC road win over Buffalo State.
Matt Zeman (Rocky River, Ohio) netted the game-winning goal after Jim Gilbride (Parma, Ohio) knotted the score at 1-1.
Buffalo State opened the scoring with a power-play of its own just 2:35 into the first period by Sean Burke (Barrie, Ont.).
Fredonia State goaltender Rick Cazares (San Jose, Calif.) shut the door the rest of the way and finished with 19 saves. He improved his personal record to 6-6-2.
Buffalo State goaltender Sean Sheehan (Mount Laurel, N.J.) made 30 saves.
With his team trailing 1-0, Gilbride scored his sixth goal of the season from Zeman and Evan DiValentino (Burlington, Ont.) at 2:41 of the second period to tie the score.
Zeman earned the No. 1 star after netting his eighth goal of the season at 12:07 of the period. DiValentino and Steve Greenberg (East Lansing, Mich.) earned assists.
The win lifted the Blue Devils (10-7-2, 4-2-2 SUNYAC) into a tie for third place with Plattsburgh, and only two points behind conference co-leaders Geneseo and Oswego.
Buffalo State (4-4-0, 7-10-1) dropped into fifth place with the loss.
Fredonia State is back in action next Friday, Jan. 27, against Cortland at Steele Hall, followed by a Jan. 28 home game vs. Oswego.
