Late goals carry Blue Devils over Cortland
FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Third-period goals by junior Matt Zeman (Rocky River, Ohio) and junior Kyle Bozoian (St. Charles, Mo.) carried Fredonia State over Cortland, 4-2, Friday night at Steele Hall.A breakout pass by junior Joe Muli (Sioux Lookout, Ont.) ahead to Zeman resulted in a 3-2 Fredonia State lead at 15:20 of the third period. Zeman outraced the defenseman, faked the Cortland goaltender out of position, and scored in an open net for his ninth goal of the season. Freshman Kurt Hogard (Thunder Bay, Ont.) also earned an assist. Bozoian scored into an empty net at 19:25 when he won the race to a loose puck and chipped it ahead while sliding across the ice on his stomach. It was Bozoian's ninth goal of the season. Assists were awarded to sophomore Neal Sheehan (Avon Lake, Ohio) and freshman Jeff Sylvester (Windsor, Ont.). Fredonia State broke on top 2-0 and it stayed that way until the third period. Goals by Cortland's Zach Dehm (Trunbull, Conn.) at 6:01 and senior Tom Girard (Glens Falls, N.Y.) at 11:04 forged a 2-2 tie. But the Blue Devils (11-7-2, 5-2-2) responded to the challenge to keep their unbeaten home record intact (9-0-0). Cortland fell to 3-14-2 overall, 1-7-1 SUNYAC. Fredonia State senior goalkeeper Rick Cazares (San Jose, Calif.) turned aside 22 of 24 Cortland shots, while Cortland senior Matt Meacham (Massena, N.Y.) made 35 saves. Junior Will Barlow (Oakville, Ont.) opened the scoring when he raced down the left wing and beat Meacham at 2:48 of the second period for his fourth goal of the season. Junior Scott Bradley (Belleville, Ont.) and sophomore Evan DiValentino (Burlington, Ont.) assisted. The Blue Devils took a 2-0 lead when freshman Shawn Walker (Wingham, Ont.) caused a turnover deep in the offensive end, then was on the receiving end of a pass from behind the net by senior Steve Greenberg (East Lansing, Mich.). Walker buried a short shot from in front of the net, his second goal of the year. Junior Don Jaeger (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) earned the second assist on the play. The Blue Devils are back at home Saturday night for a SUNYAC game vs. Oswego, the No. 7 team nationally in NCAA Division III. The Steele Hall ticket booth opens at 6 p.m. for the 7 p.m. faceoff.
