Devils roll over Wentworth, 8-1
FREDONIA, N.Y. -- A pair of freshmen had two goals each while a senior reached a career milestone in Fredonia State's 8-1 home win over Wentworth Institute of Technology.
Andrew Hess (Bowling Green, Ohio) and Steve Rizer (Smithtown) each had a pair of goals, while Neal Sheehan (Avon Lake, Ohio) netted his 50th goal as a Blue Devil to move into a tie for eighth place on the school all-time list.
Three-point games were recorded by Sheehan, who also had two assists; Hess, who had one assist; and Adam Haberman (Novi, Mich.) with three assists. Five Blue Devils had two points each.
The Blue Devils (6-5-3) took a 1-0 lead on Sheehan's goal at 6:07 of the first period. Hess scored at 8:38, Bryan Goudy (Port Huron, Mich.) at 8:54, and Hess again on a power play at 16:49 of the first period.
Fredonia State added two goals in each of the next two periods -- Richard Boyce (Missassaugua, Ont.) and Rizer in a span of 39 seconds of the second period; and Rizer and Colin Sarfeh (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) in the third period.
Patrick Street (Annapolis, Md.) came within 3:24 of posting a shutout before Wentworth's Matt Koehler (Pembroke, Mass.) scored. Street finished with 21 saves while Justin Marriott (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) stopped 39 shots for the Leopards (4-7-0).
The teams meet again 3 p.m. Sunday at the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena.
