Devils topple Johnson and Wales again

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State completed its two-game weekend sweep of Johnson and Wales with a 5-1 win Saturday at Steele Hall.

Five players had goals for the Blue Devils (8-5-2), who improved to 7-0-0 at home this season with wins Friday (7-1) and Saturday.

Senior forward Jim Gilbride (Parma, Ohio) had a goal and two assists. The goal was his second of the weekend series and his seventh lifetime goal vs. Johnson and Wales. He had a school-record tying five goals in a 2003 game.

Others with multi-point games Saturday for the Blue Devils were sophomore defenseman Noah Hamilton (Carlisle, Ont.), senior forward Tom Briggs (Fruitport, Mich.), sophomore forward Neal Sheehan (Avon Lake, Ohio), and sophomore defenseman Evan DiValentino (Burlington, Ont.). Hamilton and Briggs had one goal and one assist each, DiValentino two assists, and Sheehan two more assists after a five-point game Friday. He had one goal and six assists during the weekend.

The game-winning goal came from senior forward Steve Greenberg (East Lansing, Mich.) at 19:19 of the first period. It gave the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead after junior forward Kyle Bozoian (St. Charles, Mo.) opened the scoring at 13:00.

Hamilton scored on a power play with :14 left in the first period to put the Blue Devils up, 3-0. As a result, they improved to 7-0-0 in games they've led after one period.

The Blue Devils peppered 61 shots on net and freshman goaltender Brian Noiles (Burlington, Mass) made 56 saves for the Saints (3-10-0). Fredonia State senior goaltender Simon Maignan (Pully, Switz.) stopped 16 of 17 shots to improve to 2-1-0 this season.

Sophomore forward Shawn Roach (Grapevine, Texas) scored the Johnson and Wales goal at 1:10 of the second period.

Next up for the Blue Devils is a road game Tuesday at Utica.
