Devils defeat Cortland in season opener
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Fredonia State opened its 2007-08 season with a 5-2 victory over Cortland on the first day of the SUNYAC Challenge at Buffalo State.
Junior forward Richard Boyce (Mississauga, Ont.) had a goal and two assists, as did freshman forward Jordan Oye (Richmond, B.C.), who was appearing in his first collegiate game.
Freshman defenseman Steve Rizer (Smithtown) also scored a goal in his first collegiate game, while junior defenseman Colin Sarfeh (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and junior forward Bryan Goudy (Port Huron, Mich.) had the other goals for the Blue Devils (1-0-0).
Sophomore goaltender Pat Street (Annapolis, Md.) recorded 23 saves.
The Blue Devils broke on top 1-0 at 2:03 of the first period on the goal by Rizer, from Oye and Boyce. Cortland countered with Gerard Heiz forged a 1-1 tie at the 8:33 mark of the period, before Boyce put his team ahead to stay at 14:15. Oye and freshman forward Alex Morton (Cannington, Ont.) picked up assists.
Oye recorded his third point of the first period with his goal, the eventual game-winner, at 15:49 from senior forward Neal Sheehan (Avon Lake, Ohio) and junior forward Matt McKeown (Niagara Falls, Ont.).
Sheehan and McKeown each added their second assists of the game on Goudy's second-period score at the 3:33 mark. Boyce and Goudy picked up assists as Sarfeh completed the scoring at 8:25 of the third period.
The Blue Devils face Manhattanville on the second day of the Challenge. Game time is 4 p.m. Saturday at the Buffalo State Ice Arena.
