Devils tie No. 4 Manhattanville
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Fredonia State and No. 4 Manahattanville skated to a 2-2 tie in the second day of the SUNYAC Challenge at Buffalo State.
The Blue Devils (1-0-1) held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the game, which was decided by a shootout to determine the SUNYAC Challenge winner. Manhattanville won the shootout, 1-0, in five rounds.
Fredonia State took a 1-0 lead at 17:10 of the second period on a power-play goal by Andrew Hess (Bowling Green, Ohio), his first of the season and first as a collegian. Hess scored on a rebound after a shot through a scree by sophomore James Muscatello (Baldwinsville).
After Manhattanville's Dillon Henningson scored at 2:37 of the third period, the Blue Devils regained the lead on a power-play goal by Steve Albert (Port Huron, Mich.) at the 10:56 mark. Assists went to senior Neal Sheehan (Avon Lake, Ohio) and junior Matt McKeown (Niagara Falls, Ont.). For Sheehan, it was his 106th career point and tied him for 12th on the Fredonia State all-time scoring list. It was also his 62nd career assist, 11th most by a Blue Devil.
Manhattanville rallied to tie on a goal by Jason Murfitt with 4:24 remaining.
Fredonia State sophomore goaltender Pat Street (Annapolis, Md.) made 34 saves in his second straight start of the season. The Blue Devils are back in action Friday vs. Utica in the home opener at Steele Hall. The event will include the ceremonial raising of the 2007 SUNYAC Championship banner.
