FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Buffalo State Bengals gave new head coach Nick Carriere a welcome-home present of sorts Friday in the first round of the SUNYAC Challenge at Fredonia State's Steele Hall Ice Arena.
Senior forward Sean Burke (Barrie, Ont.) scored two goals and junior goalkeeper Sean Sheehan (Mount Laurel, N.J.) made 33 saves to lead the Bengals to a 4-2 season-opening win over the Brockport Golden Eagles.
The game marked the head coaching debut of Carriere after three seasons as a Fredonia State assistant coach.
Sophomore forward Paul Gagnon (Troy, Mich.) and junior forward Mike DeMarco (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) each had a goal for the Bengals, with Gagnon's serving as the game-winner.
The Golden Eagles (0-1-0) held a 2-1 lead on first-period goals by sophomore forward Tony Marinello (Clifton Park) and sophomore defenseman Steve Wowchuk (Merritt, B.C.).
The Bengals stormed back with three goals in the second period. They forged a 2-2 tie on Burke's second goal, at 4:43, and took the lead when Gagnon scored at 9:24.
Brockport freshman goaltender Matt Mateja (Mississauga, Ont.) made 27 saves.
