Devils hold off Cortland, 3-2, in SUNYAC Challenge
FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State held off Cortland, 3-2, in the SUNYAC Challenge nightcap Friday before a capacity crowd at the Steele Hall Ice Arena.
The Blue Devils (1-0-0) led 3-0, then held off the Red Dragons (0-1-0), who were skating 6-on-3 in the final minute and had nine power-play chances -- including two five-minute majors.
Both goaltenders played well. Fredonia State senior Simon Maignan (Pully, Switz.) made 22 saves, while Cortland senior Matt Meacham (Massena) turned aside 39 shots.
Junior forward Scott Bradley (Belleville, Ont.) had one goal and one assist to lead the Fredonia State attack. Junior forward Kyle Bozoian (St. Charles, Mo.) and freshman defenseman Colin Sarfeh (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) had one goal each. Sophomore defenseman Steve Albert (Port Huron, Mich.) had two assists.
Power-play goals by Bozoian and Bradley gave the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead before Sarfeh tallied at 8:03 of the second period to make it 3-0.
Cortland senior forward Matt Schillace (Auburn) scored his first of two power-play goals at 10:00 of the second period. His second came at 10:18 of the third period. Freshman forward Patrick Baumann (Centereach) assisted on both Cortland goals.
The Blue Devils killed off 7 of 9 short-handed situations, and were 2 of 6 on the power play.
Attendance was estimated at 1,024 spectators.
Earlier Friday, Buffalo State defeated Brockport, 4-2. There are two more Challenge games Saturday: Cortland vs. Buffalo State at 2 p.m., and Fredonia State vs. Brockport at 7 p.m.
