Devils unable to get early goals
BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- The inability to take advantage of early scoring chances proved to be Fredonia State's undoing Saturday at the SUNYAC Challenge.
The Blue Devils had a 16-2 advantage in shots in the scoreless first period, and 46-13 in the game, but fell 2-1 to the Cortland Red Dragons at SUNY Brockport.
The inability to score a goal early took on added meaning when Cortland scored a pair of power-play goals in the second period -- the first by Buddy Anderson at 12:43, and the second by Chris Corso at 17:07 -- for a 2-0 lead.
Junior forward Neal Sheehan (Avon Lake, Ohio) answered for the Blue Devils with a power-play goal at 13:13 of the third period. It was Sheehan's second goal and fourth point of the Challenge. Senior forward Kraig Kuzma (Muskegon, Mich,) and senior forward Kyle Bozoian (St. Charles, Mo.) picked up assists.
Freshman goaltender Pat Street (Annapolis, Md.) made 11 stops in the Blue Devil net.
The Blue Devils are back in action in the home opener Friday, Oct. 27, vs. Marian before meeting No. 2 ranked St. Norbert the following night (Oct. 28). Both home games have 7 p.m. faceoffs.
