Devils off to face No. 2 St. Norbert

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State will try to burst into national prominence when it takes on St. Norbert in men's hockey Friday night.

The Blue Devils (2-0-0) will be attempting to beat the No. 2 ranked team in the country in a building where they rarely lose.

With an 8-2 victory Tuesday over Marian, the Green Knights (1-0-0) improved to 49-1-2 in their last 52 games at the Cornerstone Community Center.

In addition, the Green Knights are 205-0-5 in the last 210 games in which they were leading after two periods. They led Marian 3-0 in their most recent game, then put the game on ice with five goals in the third period.

St. Norbert, located in Green Bay, Wis., has a proud hockey tradition. The Green Knights have won four straight -- and seven of the last nine -- Northern Collegiate Hockey Association titles. Correspondinly, they have made four straight NCAA Division III tournament appearances.

With two All-Americans among the 23 returning players on the roster this season, the Green Knights received three first-place votes and 195 votes in the USCHO Division III Preseason Poll. Only Middlebury College (11 first-place votes, 220 points) ranked higher.

St. Norbert has been ranked in the USCHO poll for 73 consecutive weeks and have been rated in the top four -- including 19 times as No. 1 -- for 67 of the last 68 weeks.

The Green Knights, coached by Tim Coghlin, are led by four USCHO D-III Men's Preseason All-USCHO selections. Senior forward Spencer Carbery and junior defenseman Andrew Derton were All-USCHO West First Team preseason nominees. Senior forward Connor Hughes and sophomore goaltender Kyle Jones were Second Team choices.

Fredonia State junior forward Matt Zeman (Rocky River, Ohio) was an All-USCHO East honorable mention choice.

Game time is 8 p.m. Eastern time (7 p.m. Central time). A Webcast by Green Bay's Relevant Radio 1050 AM will be available via Windows Media Player.

The Blue Devils' western trip concludes Saturday afternoon with a game vs. Marian at DePere, Wis.
