Devils strike early to mash Marian
FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Freshman forward Matt McKeown (Niagara Falls, Ont.) had a first-period hattrick to get Fredonia State off and running en route an 8-2 home-openng win over the Marian College Sabres.
McKeown and junior defenseman Steve Albert (Port Huron, Mich.) had five-point games -- McKeown added two assists and Albert had one goal and four assists -- while junior forward Neal Sheehan (Avon Lake, Ohio) had two goals and two assists.
A crowd of 802 roared its approval -- and a few fans tossed hats onto the ice -- after McKeown completed his natural hattrick at 14:13 of the first period. His earlier tallies came at 11:07 and 12:45, the latter on the power play.
After Marian's James Goodfellow (Napierville, Ill.) made it 3-1 after one period, the Blue Devils (2-1-0) struck quickly in the second period to stave off any Marian comeback hopes. Senior forward Kyle Bozoian (St. Charles, Mo.) scored just 32 seconds in the period, followed shortly by Albert's goal at 1:39.
Carl Bresser (Waupun, Wis.) cut the Marian margin to 5-2 at 12:08 of the second period, only to have Fredonia State score three unanswered power-play goals. Junior forward Adam Haberman (Novi, Mich.) started the run at 14:34 of the secondperiod, followed by the first of Sheehan's two goals at 18:02.
Sheehan closed out the scoring with his second goal 21 seconds into the third period.
Haberman added an assist and sophomore defenseman Colin Sarfeh (Laguna Niguel, Cal.) had three assists to join McKeown, Albert, and Sheehan with multi-point games.
Fredonia State used two freshman goaltenders. Tyler Owens (Vernon, Conn.) was the started and made 14 saves over the first two periods. Tim Schoen (Whitesboro, N.Y.) stopped all 10 shots he faced in the third period. It was his first collegiate appearance.
