St. Norbert cruises over Devils
ASHWAUBENON, Wis. -- Spencer Carbery scored two goals as St. Norbert rolled to a 6-2 win Friday over Fredonia State.
Carbery scored an even-strength goal in the first period and a power-play goal early in the second period for the Green Knights (2-0-0), ranked No. 2 in the USCHO Division III poll.
Junior forward Kyle Bozoian (St. Charles, Mo.) and senior forward Jim Gilbride (Parma, Ohio) had goals for the Blue Devils (2-1-0). Gilbride also had an assist.
Senior goaltender Rick Cazares (San Jose, Calif.) made 35 saves in the Fredonia State net.
St. Norbert's Kyle Jones stopped 14 of 16 shots.
Andrew Derton had four assists for the Green Knights. They outshot the Blue Devils, 41-16.
St. Norbert took 1-0 lead on Carbery's even-strength goal at 4:37 of the first period. Meanwhile, the Blue Devils were unable to mount an attack, even on their one power-play chance. They were 0 of 3 on the power play in the game, and yielded two power-play goals.
The Blue Devils had more chances in the second period, but not before falling behind 3-0. An interference penalty set up the power-play goal by Carbery at 1:22 of the period. Trevor Bayda made it 3-0 at 6:36 of the second period when his shot deflected off a skate in front of Cazares.
Junior forward Matt Zeman (Rocky River, Ohio) centered a pass to Bozoian at 7:55 of the second period to cut the Blue Devil deficit to 3-1. Gilbride was credited with the second assist.
With the Blue Devils skating one man short following a cross-checking penalty, Gilbride intecepted a crossing pass and tallied an unassisted short-handed goal at 3:07 of the third period to make it 3-2, St. Norbert.
No sooner had the Blue Devils killed one penalty, they were again short-handed as a result of a hooking penalty. St. Nobert converted this time with a power-play goal by Lonny Forrester for a 4-2 lead with 14 minutes left.
Kurtis Peterson and Connor Hughes added an insurance goals later in the third period.
With the win, St. Norbert improved to 50-1-2 in their last 53 games at the Cornerstone Community Center. In addition, the Green Knights improved to 206-0-5 in their last 211 games when they led after two periods.
Attendance was announced at 1,164.
The Blue Devils play at Marian College with face off at 5 p.m. Saturday.
