Devils fall to red-hot Plattsburgh
FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State ran into a hot goaltender and an equally hot team Saturday night at Steele Hall.
Plattsburgh freshman Bryan Hince (Kapuskasing, Ont.) stopped 40 of 40 shots, including two breakaways during a crucial portion of the second period, as the No. 5 Cardinals (7-0-0) claimed a 3-0 SUNYAC win.
Trailing 1-0 and skating two men down, the Blue Devils (3-3-2, 1-2-1 SUNYAC) had a chance for a game-tying short-handed goal. Senior Adam Haberman (Novi, Mich.) intercepted a point-to-point pass and broke in alone on Hince, who knocked the shot away to preserve the one-goal lead.
As the teams returned to even-strength, a pass out of the Fredonia State defensive end went directly to senior Steve Albert (Port Huron, Mich.) -- who had just served a penalty -- behind the Plattsburgh defense. Hince stopped Albert's breakaway and covered the puck after it deflected dangerously off a Plattsburgh player.
The next time the Blue Devils were a man-down, the Cardinals converted on the chance when a screened shot from the left point by Mike Baccaro (Rochester) sailed over the right shoulder of Fredonia State sophomore goaltender Pat Street (Annapolis, Md.). The Cardinals scored again before the second period was over as Andrew Willock (Mississaugua, Ont.) put a shot through 5-hole at 18:33 following a Plattsburgh rush.
Hince earned the No. 1 star and Plattsburgh's T.J. Cooper (Hamburg) was the No. 2 for scoring a short-handed goal at 14:07 of the first period. Street (Annapolis, Md.) earned the No. 3 star for making 43 saves, including several tough stops during the 5-on-3 penalty kill.
The Blue Devils will look to regroup when they face Buffalo State at Steele Hall in a SUNYAC game Oct. 16.
