Zeman's trick trumps Bengals

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Matt Zeman (Rocky River, Ohio) completed a hat trick and a four-point game with a goal in overtime to lead Fredonia State over Buffalo State, 4-3, in SUNYAC action Wednesday.

Zeman, a junior forward, skated out of the corner, around a defenseman, and beat Buffalo State junior goaltender Sean Sheehan (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) 3:06 into the extra session.

Senior goalkeeper Rick Cazares (San Jose, Calif.) overcame a rocky start to finish with 28 saves for the Blue Devils (6-2-1, 3-1-1 SUNYAC).

Sheehan stopped 29 shots in the Buffalo State net.

The game marked the first meeting between Fredonia State head coach Jeff Meredith and his former assistant coach, Nick Carriere, who's in his first year as the Bengal bench boss.

The teams combined for five goals and 27 shots -- 16 by Buffalo State -- in the first period Wednesday before play tightened up.

Buffalo State broke out on top, 1-0, at 7:29 of the first period on a power-play goal by junior forward Mike DeMarco (Niagara Falls, N.Y.), his first of two goals on the night.

The Bengals (4-5-0, 2-3-0 SUNYAC) made it 2-0 on a goal by freshman forward Richard Curtis (Ottsville, Pa.) at 8:35 of the first period before Zeman netted his first goal of the night, at 12:33, assisted by sophomore defenseman Noah Hamilton (Carlisle, Ont.).

DeMarco re-established Buffalo State's two-goal lead, 3-1, with a power-play goal at 17:07.

Zeman answered at 19:08 with his second goal of the period, an un assisted power-play tally.

The teams played a scoreless second period before junior forward Kyle Bozoian (St. Charles, Mo.) scored :55 seconds into the third period, from Zeman and junior forward Scott Bradley (Belleville, Ont.), to tie the game at 3-3.

The Blue Devils are idle until Dec. 2 at Potsdam.
