Rizer lifts Devils over Bengals, 4-3
FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Steve Rizer completed a three-point goal by netting the winning goal with 1:09 remaining as Fredonia State rallied past Buffalo State, 4-3, in SUNYAC men's hockey.
Rizer, a freshman defenseman from Smithtown, also had two assists while James Muscatello (Baldwinsville), Alex Morton (Cannington, Ont.), and Adam Haberman (Novi, Mich.) had one goal each for the Blue Devils (4-3-2, 2-2-1 SUNYAC).
Jason Hill (Niagara Falls) had one goal and one assist for the Bengals (2-6-2, 1-2-2 SUNYAC). Jeff Mok (Richmond Hill, Ont.) and Kerry Barchan (Oakville, Ont.) scored one goal each.
Patrick Street (Annapolis, Md.) stopped 36 of 39 shots to earn the win in net. Buffalo State's Travis Moore (Simcoe, Ont.) had 29 saves.
Down 1-0 on the goal by Hill, Fredonia State made the most of one of its few scoring chances in the first period. While forechecking in the neutral zone during a penalty kill, Muscatello stole the puck and broke in alone on Moore for the game-tying short-handed goal at 15:26 of the period.
The Blue Devils took a 2-1 early in the second period when Morton converted on a rebound off a shot by Colin Sarfeh (Laguna Niguel, Calif.). Later in the same period, the Bengals tied the score and took the lead, 3-2, on consecutive goals by Mok and Barchan.
Fredonia State asserted itself in the third period, outshooting Buffalo State 15-9, and pulling out the win. Haberman's power-play goal early in the period forged a 3-3 tie and Rizer netted the winning goal at 18:51.
