Refreshed Devils visit Cortland, Oswego

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State men's hockey team returns to action this weekend refreshed from its Thanksgiving break.

The Blue Devils (4-3-2, 2-2-1 SUNYAC) play Friday at Cortland, and Saturday at Oswego. Both SUNYAC games start at 7 p.m.

The game Friday at Cortland has potential playoff implications. The Blue Devils, with five points, are in fifth place in the SUNYAC standings. The Red Dragons (3-7-1, 2-4-0 SUNYAC) are tied for sixth. The top six teams make the conference tournament.

The Blue Devils and the Red Dragons have already met once this season, a 5-2 Fredonia State victory Oct. 19 in the SUNYAC Challenge at Buffalo State.

Meanwhile, Oswego -- the defending NCAA Division III champs -- find themselves in second place, behind Plattsburgh. The Great Lakers (4-3-1, 4-1-0 SUNYAC prior to a Friday home game vs. Buffalo State) are ranked No. 12 in the lastest USCHO.com poll.

"Having the week off at Thanksgiving has been good for us," Fredonia State coach Jeff Meredith said. "We first started the break with a nice come-from-behind win against Buffalo State (4-3 on Nov. 16), then followed that with 7 days off which was great because it gave us all time to get away, relax, re-charge our batteries, and get ready for four games in the next two weeks."

Following the SUNYAC games this weekend, the Blue Devils play at Neumann on consecutive days, Dec. 7 and Dec. 8.

"We are still a pretty young team," Meredith said, "but I like what I have seen in the last week or so in terms of us coming to grips with the identity that we need to embrace to be successful. We have raised our level of work and battle in practice and I look forward to seeing us bring that over 120 minutes this weekend."
