Plattsburgh passes Devils
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- Plattsburgh used a pair of power play goals and scored two other times in defeating Fredonia State 4-1 Saturday evening. In the process, the Cardinals passed the Devils in the SUNYAC standings.
Plattsburgh got on the board 3:00 into the game as Shane Remenda scored his first of two power play goals for the Cardinals.
The score would remain unchanged until late in the second period. Dave Friel scored to make it 2-0 at the 17:25 mark. Plattsburgh would go up 3-0 on Remenda's second power play score of the contest at 1:15 into the third period.
Fredonia State would answer 44 seconds later. Matt Zeman (Rocky River, Ohio) scored his seventh goal of the season to make it 3-1. Don Jaeger (Grosse Pt. Woods, Mich.) and Kurt Hogard (Thunder Bay, Ont.) assisted.
Plattsburgh wrapped up the scoring on a Mike Thompson goal a minute and a half later.
Plattsburgh outshot the Devils, 38-22. Fredonia State netminder Rick Cazares (San Jose, Calif.) was credtied with 34 saves. Neilson had 21 saves in a winning effort for Plattsburgh.
The game featured only nine total penalties -- six going against the Devils. Fredonia State was 0 for three on power plays, while Plattsburgh converted two in five opportunities.
The Cardinal are now tied with Geneseo for second place in the SUNYAC at 5-2-0. They boast an overall ledger of 6-4-0.
The Devils finish the first half of conference play at 3-2-2, tying them with Buffalo State for fourth place in the SUNYAC, two points behind Plattsburgh and Geneseo. They are 6-3-2 overall. Next weekend they travel to Neumann College for a pair of non-conference games on Friday and Saturday.
