No. 7 Neumann outlast Devils, 5-2
FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Nationally ranked Neumann extended its unbeaten streak to 10 straight games with a 5-2 non-conference win over Fredonia State at the Steele Hall Ice Arena.
Matt Ward (Kemptville, Ont.) had two goals and one assist to lead the Knights (9-1-4), who entered the week No. 7 in the USCHO.com poll. They are 6-0-4 over their last 10 games.
Kyle Casey (Stratford, Ont.), Mike Hedden (St. Catherines, Ont.), and Neil Trimm (Westmeath, Ont.) also scored for Neumann while goaltender Brett Leonhardt (Waterloo, Ont.) made 28 saves.
Down 1-0 after one period and 4-0 after two, the Blue Devils (5-5-3) never led in the game, but managed to mount a mild rally. It began when freshman defenseman Matt Pfalzer (Getzville/Nichols School) connected for his first collegiate goal 14 seconds into the third period, which cut the deficit to 4-1. Just under four minutes later, senior defenseman Don Jaeger (Grosse Point Woods, Mich.) made it 4-2 with a short-handed tally -- his second goal of the season -- from sophomore forward Bryan Goudy (Port Huron, Mich.).
Neumann's Trimm, the nation's leading scorer at the start of the week, stemmed the tide with his 12th goal of the season -- and his 37th point in 15 games -- at the 4:41 mark of the final period.
The game brought an end to the first half of the Blue Devil regular season. It resumes Jan. 5 at Johnson and Wales.
