Devils outscore Potsdam, 8-4
FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State scored early and often en route to an 8-4 SUNYAC home win Friday over Potsdam.
The Blue Devils (13-8-3, 7-3-3 SUNYAC) led 5-0 after the first period, and opened a lead of 6-0 before turning back a Potsdam rally in the late going.
Tom Briggs (Fruitport, Mich.), Matt Zeman (Rocky River, Ohio) and Will Barlow (Oakville, Ont.) had two goals each for Fredonia State.
Adam Gebera (Ottawa, Ont.) scored twice for the Bears (7-12-4, 6-6-1 SUNYAC).
The Blue Devils outshot the Bears, 40-22, but Rick Cazares (San Jose, Calif.) making 18 stops in the Fredonia State net.
While building its early lead, the Blue Devils scored four goals in the first 9:28 of the game. A goal at 16:00 of the first period and 3:34 of the second period increased the margin to 6-0 in favor of Fredonia State.
Potsdam countered with four straight power-play goals to make things interesting. Zeman stemmed the tide with his second goal of the night at 13:09 of the third period before Barlow completed the scoring with Fredonia State's lone power-play goal in six chances at 17:50.
Jim Gilbride (Parma, Ohio) and Shawn Walker (Wingham, Ont.) had one goal each for the Blue Devils.
The win guaranteed Fredonia State at least one home playoff series in the SUNYAC Tournament. Final seeds will be determined following the outcome of games Saturday, the final day of the SUNYAC regular season.
The Blue Devils will meet Plattsburgh at home. The Steele Hall box office opens one hour before the 7 p.m. opening faceoff.
