Briggs nets OT winner to clip Cardinals

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Tom Briggs (Fruitport, Mich) made his final regular-season home game a memorable one Saturday with the game-winning goal of a 4-3 Fredonia State victory over Plattsburgh.

Briggs scored 26 seconds into overtime when he flipped home a rebound past Plattsburgh goaltender Chris Molinaro (Nesconset, N.Y.).

Fellow senior Jim Gilbride (Parma, Ohio) took the shot which led to the score. He and freshman Jeff Sylvester (Windsor, Ont.) were credited with assists.

The Blue Devils (14-8-3, 8-3-3 SUNYAC) outshot their guests 49-24 with Molinaro making 45 saves.

Fredonia State senior goalkeeper Rick Cazares (San Jose, Calif.) stopped 21 of 24 shots.

The Cardinals (14-10-1, 8-6-0) opened the scoring with a power-play goal by Mike Thomson (LaHabra Heights, Calif.) at 4:24 of the second period.

The Blue Devils quickly countered with a power-play goal by Steve Albert (Port Huron, Mich.), from Matt Zeman (Rocky River, Ohio) and Neal Sheehan (Avon Lake, Ohio), at the 6:48 mark of the second period.

The see-saw struggle resumed later in the period. Plattsburgh's Riley Hill (Markham, Ont.) gave his team a 2-1 lead at 8:20, followed by a short-handed and unassisted neutralizer off the stick of Sheehan at 13:10.

Fredonia State took its first lead at 17:01 of the second period on a power-play goal by Scott Bradley (Belleville, Ont.), from Briggs and Will Barlow (Oakville, Ont.).

Casey Smith (Rochester, N.Y.) scored for Plattsburgh at 10:11 of the third period to forge a 3-3 tie.

With the win and a victory by Geneseo over Cortland, the Blue Devils remained in third place on the final night of the regular season. They will play host to Potsdam -- whom they defeated 8-4 Friday -- in the first round of the SUNYAC Tournament next Friday and Saturday at Steele Hall.

A ticket policy for the tournament games will be announced early next week.
