Devils take series lead with 7-2 win over Potsdam

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Scott Bradley (Belleville, Ont.) and Shawn Walker (Wingham, Ont.) had two goals each to lead Fredonia State over Potsdam, 7-2, in the first round of the SUNYAC Tournament.

Matt Zeman (Rocky River, Ohio) added four assists while Adam Haberman (Novi, Mich.) had one goal and two assists for the Blue Devils (15-8-3).

By winning, the Blue Devils need only to tie the Bears (7-14-4) in the Saturday night rematch in order to advance to the tournament semifinals. A Potdam win will force a 20-minute mini-game to break the series tie. Should the teams still be tied after the mini-game, sudden-death overtime will be used to determine the series winner.

Bradley opened the scoring at 10:44 of the first period, followed at 12:02 on a goal by Jeff Sylvester (Windsor, Ont.) for a 2-0 Fredonia State lead.

The Blue Devils made it 3-0 on Walker's first goal of the night at 17:17, only to tempt fate with penalties to send the Potsdam power play -- ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division III -- into motion.

Adam Gebera (Ottawa, Ont.) made it 3-1 at 8:03 of the second period, and Pat Lemay (Orleans, Ont.) made it 3-2 at 10:33.

The Blue Devils quickly countered with a power-play goal of their own off the stick of Neal Sheehan (Avon Lake, Ohio) at the 13:11 mark.

The third period was all Fredonia State as Bradley, Walker, and Haberman found the net in succession.

The Blue Devils finished with 41 shots to 25 for the Bears. Goaltender Rick Cazares (San Jose, Calif.) turned aside 23 shots, while Potsdam's Vince Cuccaro (Ottawa, Ont.) was credited with 34 saves.
