FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State completed its SUNYAC Tournament first-round sweep of Potsdam with a 5-3 win Saturday.
Five players had one goal each for the Blue Devils (16-8-3), who'll travel to Geneseo for a semifinal series Feb. 24 and Feb. 25.
All together, 12 Blue Devils had at least one point.
Senior goaltender Rick Cazares (San Jose, Calif.) stopped 23 of 26 shots in the Fredonia State goal.
The Blue Devils took 40 shots. Potsdam junior goaltender Vince Cuccaro (Ottawa, Ont.) made 35 saves.
The Bears (7-14-4) took their first lead of the two-game series on a power-play goal by junior winger Greg Lee (Almonte, Ont.) at 17:04 of the first period.
The Blue Devils took command with three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second period. Junior defenseman Wil Barlow (Oakville, Ont.) and sophomore forward Adam Haberman (Novi, Mich.) scored power-play goals to make it 2-1 Fredonia State. Junior forward Joe Muli (Sioux Lookout, Ont.) made it 3-1 at 9:08 of the period.
The Bears pulled within one goal twice, first on a goal by junior center Adam Gebera (Ottawa, Ont.), and later when junior winger Ryan McCarthy (Brampton, Ont.) converted on a power play.
Fredonia State countered each time. Junior forward Kraig Kuzma (Muskegon, Mich.) scored on a power play at 2:44 of the third period. Junior forward Matt Zeman (Rocky River, Ohio) put the game on ice when he scored into an empty net in the final minute.
Zeman also had an assist while sophomore defenseman Evan DiValentino (Burlington, Ont.) collected two assists. The win improved the Blue Devils' home record to 13-0-1 in 2005-06.
