Devils advance with SUNYAC quarterfinal win
FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State defeated Buffalo State, 4-2, in a SUNYAC Tournament quarterfinal game Tuesday at Steele Hall.
The game-winning goal came at 5:13 of the third period. A Blue Devil player checked a Buffalo State player off the puck in the corner deep in the Buffalo State zone. Senior forward Neal Sheehan (Avon Lake, Ohio) gathered in the loose puck and scored from the left slot to break a 2-2 tie. It was Sheehan's 12th goal of the season and his third game-winner.
The No. 3 seeded Blue Devils (15-8-3) added an empty-netter by junior forward Bryan Goudy (Port Huron, Mich.) with 29 seconds remaining. Earlier in the game, they built a 2-0 lead on goals by sophomore Andrew Dissanyake (Ajax, Ont.) and junior forward Richard Boyce (Mississauga, Ont.). Dissanyake's goal was his first of the season and his second in 26 games covering two seasons.
The Bengals (10-12-4), seeded No. 6, rallied with two goals in the second period. Junior forward Joe Curry (Indian River, Ont.) scored on a power play at 15:27 before sophomore defenseman Tyler Soehner (Baden, Ont.) forged a 2-2 tie on a deflection with 11 seconds left in the period.
Fredonia State sophomore goaltender Pat Street (Annapolis, Md.) made 26 saves and improved to 11-3-1 this season. It was Street's first collegiate post-season victory.
Buffalo State sophomore Kyle Gunn-Taylor (West Seneca, N.Y.) made 39 stops.
The Blue Devils advance to a SUNYAC semifinal matchup 7 p.m. Saturday at No. 9 ranked Oswego. The Lakers, seeded No. 2 in the SUNYAC Tournament, are the defending NCAA Division III national champs.
