Blue Devils ousted by Oswego
OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Fredonia State's bid for back-to-back SUNYAC titles ended with a 4-1 semifinal loss to Oswego.
The Blue Devils (15-9-3) were outshot 44-20 in the game. Junior goaltender Kevin Amborski (Bloomfield, N.Y.) made 40 saves in the Fredonia State net.
The Lakers (18-5-2), the defending NCAA Division III champs, broke open a scoreless game with goals by Peter Magagna and Brendan McLaughlin late in the first period. After a scoreless third period, Oswego's Tony DiNunzio gave his team a 3-0 lead.
The Blue Devils breathed new life with a power-play goal by junior Bryan Goudy (Port Huron, Mich.) at 11:43 of the third period. Camped in front of the net, Goudy scored his 12th goal of the season -- tying for the team lead -- following a shot by junior defenseman Colin Sarfeh (Laguna Niguel, Calif).
Oswego regained the momentum with a power-play of its own by C.J. Thompson in the middle of the third period.
Both teams finished 1 for 5 on the power play.
While Fredonia State's season draws to a close, Oswego advanced to the SUNYAC championship game next Saturday at Plattsburgh. The Cardinals advanced with a 6-0 semifinal win over Potsdam.
